A Basic Website Security Checklist

You do not need to be a security expert to protect your website. This checklist covers the simple, high-impact habits that stop the most common attacks and keep your customers' data safe, from updates and passwords to input handling and backups.

A Basic Website Security Checklist

Keep everything updated

Outdated dependencies and plugins are a top entry point for attackers because known vulnerabilities are public. Update regularly and remove packages you no longer use.

Protect logins and secrets

Use strong, unique passwords with two-factor authentication on every admin account. Never commit API keys or passwords to your repository; store them as environment variables instead.

Validate input and use HTTPS

Treat all form input as untrusted and validate it on the server, not just in the browser. Serve every page over HTTPS so data cannot be read or changed in transit.

Limit access

Give people only the permissions they need. Protect admin routes behind authentication, and remove access promptly when someone leaves the team.

Back up and monitor

Automatic, tested backups turn a disaster into an inconvenience. Add basic monitoring and alerts so unusual activity gets noticed quickly.
